What is a REALTOR® and how do you say it?

A little known fact is that there is a difference between a real estate agent and a REALTOR®. A real estate agent is simply someone licensed to practice real estate in a particular state. This person works for a real estate broker, normally called his or her broker-in-charge. A REALTOR® is also a real estate agent as described above, but in addition is a member of the National Association of REALTORS® which prescribes a code of ethics and standards of practice to which the REALTOR® must adhere. These standards include guidelines about how REALTORS® are to conduct themselves with members of the public, duties to clients and customers, duties to the public, and duties to other REALTORS®. For the complete text, see: http://www.realtor.org/mempolweb.nsf/pages/code#Duties%20to%20Clients%20and%20Customers

Another noteworthy fact concerns the pronunciation of the word REALTOR®. Curiously, many choose to say this word as if there were an “a” or an “i” between the REAL and the TOR, like “realator” or “realitor.” These are incorrect. It’s simply pronounced exactly as it appears – “REAL-TOR.” The same applies to the word realty. There is no vowel between the “real” and the “ty.” It’s simply pronounced “real-tee.” So, when you hear these said incorrectly, make the correction, especially if the person speaking is a REALTOR®.
